A. GENERAL DATA
1. WHAT IS BOOVIE?
Boovie® is a festival-competition of book-trailers that offers participants a form of training based on personal development and non-formal means: mindful reading, trailer, acting, creative writing, film editing, cinematography, advertising spot.
The festival will take place between 23 - 26 July 2024 and will take place physically.
2. PURPOSE OF THE CONTEST
The aim of the competition is to reduce the percentage of functional illiteracy, by increasing the interest in conscious reading among middle school and high school students, manifested by the creation of artistically and technically qualitative book-trailers.
3. COMPETITION OBJECTIVES
3.1. The general objectives of the competition are:
a) Cultivating an interest in reading and the pleasure of reading consciously;
b) Stimulating students' critical and autonomous thinking and developing empathy;
c) Developing teamwork skills;
d) Developing the capacity to build a message through an integrated approach;
e) Creating a modern multicultural and transdisciplinary vision connected to contemporary realities.
3.2. The specific objectives of the competition are:
a) Developing the skills of analysis and synthesis, by identifying the nodal meanings of a book and rendering them in filmic language;
b) Encouraging flexibility in thinking, responsibility for team decisions and emotional experience;
c) Training in team negotiation and persuasion skills, necessary in the creation of an advertising product;
d) Developing a spirit of competition based on values;
e) Development of technical skills and their application in making a book-trailer;
f) Stimulating creativity and its expression in multimodal languages;
g) Broadening the cultural horizon through contact with different worlds and cultures as well as with diverse learning situations.
4. PARTICIPANTS
Students from secondary school - grades V - VIII, from high school - grades IX - XII, from state and private educational institutions, from Romania and abroad, as well as students enrolled in theater/cinematography clubs, from Children's Palaces/Houses of Culture, etc. or from units operating under CAEN code 8552, from the same education cycle, provided they have a coordinating teacher.
B. CONTEST DESCRIPTION
1. SECTIONS
The festival will take place with direct participation or online, depending on the situation. The contest includes five standard sections and one section (POCKET TRAILER) out of the contest:
• BOOVIE Kids - for secondary school students (5th and 6th grades). The section is divided into five subsections, one for each novel entered in the contest;
• BOOVIE Junior - for secondary school students (7th and 8th/9th grades, for countries where the 9th grade is related to the gymnasium, e.g. Republic of Moldova). The section is divided into five subsections, one for each novel entered in the contest;
• BOOVIE Rookie - for 9th and 10th grade high school students. The section is divided into five subsections, one for each novel entered in the contest;
• BOOVIE Majors - for 11th and 12th grade high school students. The section is divided into five subsections, one for each novel entered in the contest;
• BOOVIE+ - section from different fields, non-literary/non-epic or related to the subjects studied at school, for middle and high school students. In this section, productions in the form of animation and own scripts are accepted; contains only one book.
• ExtRO BOOVIE - section intended for Romanian students from the diaspora and foreign students; they will choose a book from the contest, in accordance with the education cycle to which they belong;
• POCKET TRAILER - section outside the competition, where teams that did not fall within the official registration period or those that do not meet the minimum number of members specified in these Regulations can sign up, subject to the same conditions. Teams whose trailer failed to pass the preliminary pre-selection stage will also be transferred to this section.
2. REGISTRATION OF STUDENTS IN THE COMPETITION
2.1. Enrollment in the competition of students and teachers can be done either through the web application - Boovie WebApp, available through desktop/laptop/mobile phone browsers, by following the Enrollment link from the Enrollment menu available on the website www.boovie .ro during the period February 1, 2024 - March 10, 2024, either from the Boovie mobile application, available in AppStore (for phones with iOS system (iPhone) and in the Google Play Store or Huawei Store (for phones with Android system).
2.2. Registration is done by each individual participant, teacher or student, by completing the registration form, after creating the user account. After completing the process of filling in the data in the form, each participant will find in their own account a (NIC) file related to the Information Note and Consent. Students, in addition to teachers, will also find a form (APR) related to Acord of Parents or Rlegal representative. Both the NIC and the APR are pre-filled with the form data and must be downloaded, holographically signed by the holders and parents/legal representatives, then carefully scanned or photographed to be correctly framed and legible (with all information visible) and uploaded in the same personal user account. Students and teachers who already have an account in the application will be able to use the same account, only having to go through the registration form to update their personal information (age, class, school, etc.).
2.3. At the end of the individual registration process, the teacher can start forming teams. After filling in the team name, the teacher has the following options available to enroll his students:
• a QRcode that the students can scan directly from the teacher's phone, to give their consent to join the team;
• if the students are not in the same place as the teacher, he can copy the link to the access request, which he then sends to the students;
• the link can also be distributed to students by directly pressing the specific share/distribution icon on the device from which they accessed their account.
2.4. The team is considered registered and eligible after verification by the organizer of the correct and complete completion of the Information and Consent Notes as well as the Agreement of the Parents or Legal Representative, related to all team members. The verification involves not only verifying the uploading of the documents, but also the veracity of the completed data or signatures. In the event of incorrect completion, the participant or even all team members may be invited to re-fill the documents with correct data, in accordance with reality, or otherwise may be disqualified from the competition.
2.5. Enrollment in the competition implies the binding and irrevocable acceptance and compliance of these Regulations by all participants.
2.6. The same team can enter only one section. If the same members want to enroll in Boovie plus, the same team coordinator teacher will form a new team, with the same members but will give the team a new name.
2.7. The coordinating teacher can request the conclusion of a partnership contract between the educational unit in which he works, on the one hand, and, on the other hand, the "Spiru-Haret" Focșani National Pedagogical College and the Grow Up Project Focșani Association, taking into account the following :
a) A teacher can coordinate several teams, provided that, for each additional team, there is also a second coordinator; for a team there can be a maximum of two coordinating teachers;
b) A partnership contract is concluded for each team, which will include the names of teachers and students, which will be available in the user account of the coordinating teacher, in the WebApp or the Boovie mobile application, at the latest on the date announced in this regard at the beginning registrations;
c) in order for a team to be able to choose the book for which they want to create the book-trailer, the coordinating teacher of the team must download the partnership, present it to the educational unit of which it is a part for signature by the director of the unit, scan in color and upload it back to the same user account, until the date announced in this regard at the beginning of the registrations. Otherwise, the team will not be able to participate in the selection of the card, and will be redistributed to the free places from the cards of the section to which it has registered, establishing as the last deadline for the transmission of the signed partnership the date of March 10, 2024, at 11 p.m.: 59. If the partnership has not been submitted even by this date, the team can be moved to the "Pocket Trailer" section.
2.8. There are no registration and participation fees for students and teachers.
2.9. For the Pocket Trailer section, the number of members of a team can vary up to a maximum of 11. The team can choose any of the books in the contest, respecting the educational cycle to which they belong. This section has separate prizes and is not eligible for the Boovie Gala Grand Prizes. Prizes will be determined based on the number of views and likes on Boovie's YouTube channel (40%) and the jury's appreciation (60%).
2.10. Any number of teams can enter from each school.
3. PROCEEDING OF THE COMPETITION
3.1. A team will be made up of 6-11 members, who may be from the same class or from different classes, belonging to the same school unit and the same education cycle. A student can be part of 2 different teams, in compliance with the conditions of this regulation. In order to ensure crowding effects and/or adequate representation of the characters/scenes, the team can add a maximum number of 4 people, who will register like any other participant, will upload the holographically signed documents, will be added by the coordinating teacher to the team and will receive the status of Extra. Extras do not appear on diplomas, cannot be nominated for performance awards and will not be able to participate in Gala events.
3.2. It is recommended that the teams include students who have the following skills:
- artistic (actors, screenwriter, scenographer, costume designer, director);
- technical (video camera operator, video editor).
3.3. Each team will choose the book they want to make the trailer for. There will be a limited number of places for each book, which will be filled in the order of registration. The book assignment procedure is as follows:
- The teams read all the books proposed in the competition in the section to which they belong;
- Each team will designate the person who participates in choosing the book, either a coordinating teacher or the student-leader;
- The choice of the book will be made from the application made available by the Organizer only to the person designated by the team;
- Teams that failed to submit the partnership signed by the management of the institution they represent on time, as well as other teams that for various reasons did not participate in choosing the book or failed to choose a book, will be assigned directly by Organizer or by drawing lots, carried out online by the Organizer, in the subsections where there are still free places;
- Teams from abroad can choose any book from the education cycle to which they belong, by announcing directly to the organizers, at the email address [email protected].
3.4. On March 14, 2024 the books will be selected; participants will see in the application, within the team card, the name of the card they managed to choose; selected teams and cards may also be announced on the Official Facebook Page of the Boovie Contest-Festival only after the draw has taken place for the remaining cards.
3.5. During the period 15 March - 10 May 2024, the teams make and send the trailers.
3.6. The trailers must be made entirely by the students in the team, who can ask for guidance/assistance from parents/coordinating teachers or any person outside the team, without them directly intervening in the creation of the final product. Otherwise, the team will be disqualified from the competition (or their award will be publicly withdrawn, if foreign interference is discovered in the trailer after the awards ceremony).
3.7. The use of sounds/music, images, graphic elements and effects is done with the mandatory mention of each element taken from the public domain or by purchasing the copyright: name, first name of the author (where applicable), the name of the file and the link to the source. All this information will be noted in the trailer upload form directly in the app as well as in a single template inserted in the end credits of the trailer.
3.8. Images, effects and graphics taken from the public domain or through copyright purchase cannot total more than 20 seconds in the entire length of the trailer.
3.9. Artistic plagiarism is prohibited and will result in trailer disqualification. The reporting of a situation of artistic plagiarism will be done via an e-mail sent to the address [email protected], within a maximum of seven days from the moment the trailers are released on the YouTube platform. The final decision belongs to the jury and will be officially communicated.
3.10. Each trailer will be filmed in landscape format and must contain:
a) Identification credits, namely the name and logo of the school unit, the name of the team and the title of the book that is the basis of the trailer; they can be inserted both at the beginning and dispersed throughout the trailer;
b) Production credits - the names of the students in the team/the roles performed within the project, the name of the coordinating teacher; they will also specify the device model with which they filmed, the application or software with which they edited the film, all sources from which music, images were takenni etc (see art 3.7.), at the end of the trailer, before the bloopers;
c) The organizer will add its own initial and final credits to each trailer, but their duration will not be taken into account when calculating the trailer's final duration.
3.11. Trailer duration:
- identification and production credits can total a minimum of 20s and a maximum of 30s together;
- the actual trailer will have a minimum of 3:00 minutes and a maximum of 3:30 minutes;
- bloopers will be between a minimum of 15 seconds and a maximum of 30 seconds;
- the total duration of the final product will fall, taking into account the above, between a minimum of 3:35 minutes and a maximum of 4:30 minutes.
3.12. All trailers will be subtitled in English.
3.13. The trailer will be uploaded directly to the application, by the team leader, during which he will delimit the moments that represent the opening credits, end credits, bloopers and the trailer itself. The upload will be done no later than 23:59:59 of the deadline, a date that will be announced in good time, on our own communication channels through various social media platforms. During the process of uploading the trailer, a relevant fragment chosen by the production team, with a duration of 20 seconds, from the trailer will also be uploaded, a fragment that the Organizer will use to promote the trailer during the Contest. The trailer will be made so that it does not exceed 5GB.
4. EVALUATION AND AWARD
4.1. Evaluation criteria for book-trailers:
- integration of the major meanings of the book;
- the narrative quality of the scenario, suitable for the book-trailer format, not for a summary;
- editing, observing the visual and sound rhythm
- the force of persuasion;
- correctness of the written message;
- the directorial concept;
- the strength of the image, scenography, costumes, make-up;
- the suitability of the soundtrack;
- acting performance.
4.2. The first pre-selection will be made within two weeks from the date of receipt of the last book-trailer by the Boovie team. Films that did not comply with the regulations will be moved to the Pocket Trailer, the production teams will not physically participate in the festival, they will not have access to the subsection awards or the Grand Awards.
4.3. The pre-selection jury will evaluate the remaining book-trailers in the competition online during June 2024, in the Boovie WebApp. The jury will determine the hierarchy - I, II, III prizes and a variable number of mentions, depending on the number of teams participating in each subsection/section. 30% of the trailers from each subsection/section will be evaluated by the second jury, the Gala Jury, which will be present at Gale on the days of the festival and will determine the awarding of the Grand Prizes.
4.4. If there are less than 3 book-trailers in a sub-section or Boovie+/ExtRO-Boovie sections, they will receive a special prize and will only compete for the Grand Jury Prizes.
4.5. If several trailers have the same score, the prize is shared between the teams.
4.6. A festive Gala will be organized, for which the best trailers from the competition will be selected, for the following categories - female performance, male performance, screenplay, picture, editing, original soundtrack, direction, scenography, as well as for the Boovie® Grand Prize for each of the two categories of representation in the competition, gymnasium and high school respectively. If there are not enough trailers with an original soundtrack, the prize will not be awarded.
4.7. There will be prizes in money and/or products, participation in thematic courses, invitations to radio/tv shows, etc. as follows:
• First Prize one for each subsection, for Boovie+ and ExtRO Boovie
• Second Prize one for each subsection, for Boovie+ and ExtRO Boovie
• Prize III, one for each subsection, for Boovie+ and ExtRO Boovie
• Mentions a number of mentions equal to 20% of the number of finalist teams in each section), for each sub-section separately, for Boovie+ and for ExtRO Boovie;
• Popularity award;
• Awards from the festive Gala, awarded by the sponsors:
- Grand Jury Prize for Female/Male Performance;
- Grand Jury Prize for Screenplay;
- Grand Jury Prize for Image;
- Grand Jury Prize for Editing;
- Grand Jury Prize for Original Soundtrack;
- Grand Jury Prize for Directing;
- Grand Jury Prize for Scenography;
- Grand Prize / BOOVIE® Trophy.
Partners and sponsors can award special mentions and prizes.
4.8. The popularity award will be given following the public vote. The trailers will be uploaded by the organizers on the YouTube channel of the festival, with a link from Facebook. Only votes cast by subscribers to Boovie's YouTube channel will be considered. If the number of likes is much higher than the number of views, that trailer will be removed from the list of candidates for the popularity award.
4.9. Posting of trailers (in whole or in part) by filmmakers on any media network, online, social media, etc. before the contest results in the team being moved to the Pocket Trailer without the opportunity to compete for the Popularity Award.
4.10. Teams and all teachers involved will receive certificates of participation (only those who did not receive an award).
5. FINAL PROVISIONS
5.1. The copyrights on the works entered in the contest belong to the authors, but they are also transferred to BOOVIE®, through the Grow Up Project Focșani Association. After the announcement of the winners, all participating school units have the right to use the book-trailers resulting from the contest, to highlight the extracurricular activity, participation in other educational events, etc., with the mandatory preservation of the original generic created by the Organizer.
5.2. The organizer reserves the right to remove from the contest any participant who does not follow the rules of appropriate behavior and communication throughout the organization and conduct of the contest, in relation to Boovie staff and any other person connected to Boovie.
5.3. Each team from Romania has the obligation to be represented at the gala by at least one teacher (or parent/adult with the written confirmation of the director of the unit/Board of Administration of the institution from which the team originates) and at least one student; exceptions to this provision can only be special/particular situations that prevent even this minimal representation; in this case, the coordinating teacher will send an information to the organizers, no later than 24 hours after the appearance of the reasons/situation preventing attendance at the gala.
5.4. The entry of the teams into the community will be done respecting the sanitary requirements in force on the date of the festival.
5.5. The students will have their student card with photo, endorsed and stamped up to date, as well as the epidemiological notice.
5.6. The coordinating teacher/parent/adult accompanying the group will supervise the students throughout the festival, being responsible for complying with all the Organizer's requirements regarding behavioral and administrative aspects, such as those related to accommodation and serving meals, signing related documents, etc., including to the auxiliary staff accompanying the group, such as the drivers of the means of transport with which the group travels.
5.7. Board and lodging are provided within the available budget and for a limited number of team members.
5.8. The organizer reserves the right to adjust these regulations if the situation requires it, in order to ensure the smooth running of each of the stages. Adjustments will be announced in good time on the website www.boovie.ro and on social media channels (Facebook and Instagram), through messaging applications or by direct contact.
5.9. The present regulation stipulates the conditions that participants must meet in order to be considered eligible. Registration and participation in BOOVIE®, Festival-concurs de book-trailers, 9th edition, means for the participants the unconditional and irrevocable compliance with these Regulations.
